If we’re not careful, we can turn alignment into another self-improvement project.
We start thinking, If I could just get my schedule right... if I could just do everything God asked me to do... if I could just master these 7 steps... if I could just get this all to work better, then I’ll finally be aligned.
And gradually, alignment becomes another thing we find ourselves striving to accomplish. Another finish line. Another checklist. Another way to measure whether we’re getting it right.
But truth be told…
Alignment isn’t about you. Nor is it something to get right.
It’s about Him.
Jesus didn’t say, “Seek first your purpose.”
He didn’t say, “Seek first your calling.”
He didn’t even say, “Seek first becoming the best version of yourself.”
He said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33 ESV).
Notice the focus isn’t on you.
It’s on Him.
His kingdom. His righteousness.
Believe it or not, His kingdom and His righteousness isn’t about your right doing. It’s about your right standing in Him. It’s knowing who He is... and who you are because you are in Him.
So while you might be busy trying to align your schedule, God’s aligning your heart.
While you’re busy perfecting your strategic plan, He’s aligning your soul.
While you’re busy organizing your days, He’s examining your motives.
And while you’re asking God to line everything up around you… He’s saying, “I’d actually like to start with what’s happening inside of you.”
Because before God aligns your calendar... your plans… your checklist, He always aligns your mind.
Alignment Isn’t About Skillset. It’s a Mindset.
Over the last 12 years, I’ve had the opportunity to coach thousands of people from all different backgrounds, industries, levels of success, countries, values, dreams, and skillsets.
In the early part of my coaching career, I focused primarily on behavior modification—helping people fix problems through better systems and processes.
And it worked.
It just wasn’t sustainable.
You could hand someone a clear 1-2-3 strategic plan and eventually the same patterns would emerge.
Then, years later, I found myself traveling all over the world—preaching, speaking in churches, and ministering to believers—only this time with the Word of God in my hand, not a system or a strategy.
And yet, the same patterns began to emerge.
Time and time again, we watched people become hearers of the Word, but given enough time, very few became doers of the Word.
Far too often, we saw believers searching for the next prophetic word without first aligning their lives with the last one they’d already received.
And if I’m being honest?
I recognized those same patterns in my own life.
That’s when I realized something that would forever change the way I coach, lead, and write:
They weren’t lacking information; they were living from misaligned belief systems.
They knew what to do.
They even knew the Scriptures.
But their minds hadn’t yet aligned with the truth they already knew.
Alignment isn’t about skillset. It’s a mindset.
Before Your Steps Change, Your Mind Does
While a new routine may change your behavior for a while, only a renewed mind—an aligned mind—has the power to sustain it.
What keeps us stuck isn’t a lack of information or even skillset—it’s a lack of alignment with the truth.
Because until our minds come into agreement with God’s Word, even the best strategy, theology, dream, or vision will eventually collapse under the weight of misaligned thinking.
That’s why your morning routine was never meant to become the goal.
It is simply a reason to meet with God every morning—to allow Him to speak to you before your routines, habits, thought patterns, or even the pull of this world have the opportunity to shape the way you think.
He’s not simply trying to align your steps.
He begins by aligning your mind. Then He aligns your heart. Because when your mind and heart come into agreement with Him, your steps naturally begin to follow.
Align your mind.
Align your heart.
Align your steps.
Go figure.
Jesus Started With the Mind, Too
This isn’t just a practical rhythm. It’s the pattern of the Kingdom.
The Pharisees were often preoccupied with outward actions. But Jesus continually addressed something deeper.
While religion starts with behavior; Jesus starts with belief.
That’s why Jesus’ very first recorded message wasn’t simply, “Behave differently.”
It was: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17).
The word repent comes from the Greek word metanoeō, meaning to change your mind—to think differently.
In other words: Don’t wait until Heaven to begin thinking like Heaven.
Jesus came to do far more than modify your behavior; He came to transform what you believe by changing the way you think.
So the question becomes less: “How do I live aligned?”
And more: “How do I come into agreement with the Word of God?”
Alignment Begins With Agreement
By definition, align means “a position of agreement or alliance.”
Did you catch that?
Keyword: Agreement.
Our greatest struggle isn’t our behavior; it’s our agreement.
Every thought is an invitation because every thought asks for your agreement.
And whatever you continually agree with eventually shapes the direction of your life.
Agree with God’s truth, and your life begins aligning with His truth.
Agree with a lie, and your life begins moving away from His truth.
Agreement doesn’t determine what is true; it simply determines what will shape your life and the direction in which your life aligns.
Think about the Garden.
Before there was ever a bite of fruit...
Before there was ever shame...
Before there was ever hiding...
There was agreement.
God had already spoken. Adam and Eve were living in agreement with His Word.
Then the serpent came: “Did God really say...?” (Genesis 3:1).
The enemy couldn’t change God’s Word, so instead he questioned it.
He introduced a competing thought.
And Eve agreed.
Truth never changed. Her agreement did.
The enemy never needed to change God’s truth.
He only needed Eve to change what she agreed with.
And the same battle continues today.
Every Voice Is Competing for One Thing
Every day, countless voices compete for your agreement.
The voice of fear whispers, “What if everything falls apart?”
The voice of culture insists, “You have to do more, be more, achieve more.”
The voice of your past reminds you, “You’ll always be who you’ve always been.”
The voice of your pain convinces you, “You’ll never heal from this.”
The voice of pressure demands, “Hurry. Perform. Don’t fall behind.”
And then there’s the voice of Jesus.
The One who simply says:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
You will always live in the direction of the voice you’ve continually agreed with.
Before alignment is ever reflected in your actions, it’s first established in your agreement.
That is why alignment isn’t just about getting your schedule in order or becoming more disciplined.
It is about bringing your mind, your heart, your beliefs, and your life into agreement with the Truth.
I Have Thoughts. I Am Not My Thoughts.
We all have negative thoughts.
Anxious thoughts feel real.
Hopeless thoughts feel real.
Fear-filled ideas absolutely feel true.
But too often, we assume our thoughts are true simply because they feel real.
Truth isn’t determined by feelings. Truth is determined by what God says.
Most people allow their thoughts to define their reality, but as believers, the foundation of our reality is not our thoughts—it’s the Word of God.
Repeat after me:
I have thoughts. I am not my thoughts.
Jesus said: “If you abide in My word... you are truly My disciples” (John 8:31 AMP).
Notice, He didn’t say, “If you occasionally read My Word.”
He said, abide.
Remain. Dwell. Stay. Make your home there.
Because you don’t become aligned by simply visiting God’s truth.
You become aligned by learning to live in it.
Want to Go Deeper? This Week’s Podcast Is All About This.
If this just challenged the way you’ve thought about alignment, this week’s podcast episode goes straight into this conversation.
We’re talking about the battle for your agreement, why changing your circumstances won’t necessarily change your life, and what happens when you stop trying to get everything around you aligned and allow God to begin with what’s happening within you.
Because maybe the breakthrough you’ve been asking God for doesn’t begin with a new opportunity, a better strategy, a clearer plan, or another prophetic word.
Maybe it begins with asking one question: What have I come into agreement with?
Listen to this week’s episode and let’s keep going.
Because alignment precedes clarity—and alignment begins with agreement.
