Marked by Peace
A Return to Center: Living from His Presence
Have you ever felt like your life looks full… but feels empty?
Like your days are packed, your mind is racing, and yet—there’s a quiet undercurrent of anxiety you can’t seem to shake?
Do you feel the constant pressure to perform… to keep up… to hold it all together?
You find yourself overwhelmed with distractions—the demands of the job, your phone, another task, something else on your schedule.
And even when you try to rest, your mind won’t slow down? No matter what you do, the peace you’re craving never really comes.
What if the problem isn’t your schedule…
but what’s at the center of it?
This is the tension I’ve been sitting in.
Not because I don’t love God.
Not because I don’t desire peace.
But because I’ve had to confront how easy it is to drift—subtly, slowly—into a life where He’s no longer at the center, even while still building things for Him.
And in this season, God has been gently but clearly calling me back.
Back to simplicity.
Back to presence.
Back to alignment.
Not asking me to do more… but inviting me to return to Him.
Maybe you can relate.
Well, it was in this posture—slowing down, leaning in, paying attention—that something shifted as I finished reading through the book of Exodus.
I couldn’t help but pause, reflect, and honestly feel undone as I read Exodus 40:34:
“Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.”
That footnote to this verse is everything:
He (the Lord) graciously allowed His presence to be felt and seen, every day, in the center of their camp.
Not on the outskirts.
Not occasionally.
Not just for leaders.
Right in the center.
What This Reveals About God
God didn’t just give the Israelites direction—He gave them Himself.
He didn’t just give them a destination—He gave them a dwelling.
He didn’t just give them a promise—He gave them His presence.
He didn’t just give them guidance—He gave them constant nearness.
Here’s what’s important to understand:
This was never about getting to the Promised Land as fast as possible… it was about forming them.
God wasn’t keeping anything from them. He was preparing them.
He was retraining their minds.
Reconditioning their hearts.
Because this wasn’t just a group of people on a journey—this was a people who had lived in bondage for generations.
They had been shaped by slavery.
Surrounded by false gods.
Conditioned by survival.
They didn’t know any other way.
So God, in His kindness and in His justice, began to reveal Himself—not just through what He said, but through how He led them.
Step by step.
Day by day.
Demonstrating His power… while realigning His people.
This was never about getting there quickly.
It was about becoming the kind of people who could live with God at the center.
And He does the same for us.
Alignment is learning to live a life where everything flows from His presence at the center.
What This Reveals About Us
If I’m being honest, I’ve lived much of my life from a
“When I get there, then I will…” mindset.
“When work isn’t so crazy, then I will…”
“When I have more time, then I will…”
“When things are more under control, then I will…”
“When I’m less tired, then I will…”
“When I feel more disciplined, then I will…”
Maybe you can relate.
And if we’re all being honest… that “when” never comes.
Things don’t slow down.
And if they do… we fill the space.
Because that’s what capable people do (or at least that’s what we tell ourselves)…
We convince ourselves we don’t have time. We get so busy doing things for the Lord that we rarely spend time with the Lord.
Or we reduce it to a Sunday service…
Or an occasional prayer that feels more like a last resort before a hard moment.
But that was never the design.
I’m not here to shame you.
Nor am I here to guilt you into intimacy with the Lord.
I’m here to remind you—there is so much more available in our day-to-day walk with Him.
If you find yourself in this place, this is your invitation to lay down the excuses that quietly rob you of the very transformation God is doing in you.
Because this isn’t a time issue—though most of us think it is.
It isn’t a circumstantial issue—we’re all experiencing some dimension of the wilderness right now.
It’s a priority issue.
It’s a center issue.
It’s a presence issue.
Presence over Performance.
Moses learns something vital in Exodus 33 (which led to what we are discussing in Exodus 40).
This is after he’s already encountered God.
After being called from a burning bush.
After confronting Pharaoh.
After leading an entire nation out of slavery.
This is after standing at the edge of the Red Sea—with nowhere to go—and watching God make a way where there was none.
After witnessing miracle after miracle:
Manna falling from heaven.
Water coming from a rock.
God providing, guiding, sustaining—again and again.
And still…
He’s leading a people who are inconsistent.
Complaining.
Quick to forget.
Still trying to control outcomes instead of trust God.
And if we’re honest… we’re not so different.
So once again, Moses returns to the presence of the Lord.
Here is Moses request:
“Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You…” (Exodus 33:13).
After all that, Moses is still asking God to show him the way…
He’s still wanting God to tell him what to do.
Have you ever been there before?? I have.
And yet, God’s response changes everything: “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest” (Exodus 33:14).
This is a divine reset.
A divine order, divine alignment.
He’s no longer inviting Moses to simply ask for direction.
He’s reorienting Moses to ask for God Himself.
He doesn’t say, “Here’s what you will do… here’s the way you must go, Moses.”
He says, “My presence will go with you.”
In other words—don’t just seek My hand… seek My heart.
Don’t just seek an answer; seek me!
Because when you have His presence, you don’t have to strive for the plan.
You’re led by it.
Then note what He says… “and I will give you rest.”
Presence → Then rest
Not:
Hustle → then rest
Strategy → then peace
Arrival → then exhale
His presence is the place of rest.
Alignment Equals Peace
Alignment is not about:
Doing more
Building faster
Figuring everything out
It’s not about finding peace in artificial things such as:
Zoning out on your phone instead of slowing down with the Lord
Turning on the TV just to “shut your mind off”
Pouring another drink to take the edge off Staying busy so you don’t have to face what’s going on internally
Working longer hours because it feels productive
Filling silence with noise Isolating instead of opening up
Over time, what you run to for peace can become the very thing pulling you further from it.
True alignment is a rhythm that teaches you how to center your life around the presence of God.
Because when His presence is central:
Peace becomes normal
Clarity becomes natural
Movement becomes led, not forced
The picture is clear:
The Israelites didn’t organize their lives and then invite God into it.
They built their entire world around where God was.
Because when His presence is no longer central, we begin:
Striving for answers
Manufacturing the “how”
Carrying weight we were never meant to hold
And this—this is what creates chaos and a lack of peace (ask me how I know).
But when He is central:
You don’t chase peace…
You’re marked by it.
Because you’re living from the place He promised:
“I will be with you.”
“I will give you rest.”
Peace Is a Person, Not a Circumstance
Now, this doesn’t mean life will be easy.
Jesus Himself said: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
That tells us something powerful: Peace isn’t found in a problem-free life. It’s found in returning your heart to Him—again and again and again.
Not just at salvation…but as a lifestyle, with Christ at the very center of it.
That’s why my Arise & Align time has become non-negotiable.
Because it trains me to return.
Arise & Align is not a system. It’s a return to center.
A life where His presence is the priority,
His voice is the guide,
and His peace is the indicator.
Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)
I pray your life becomes one centered around Him—marked by His peace, not your circumstances.
This is the life you were created to live.
Reflection Questions (Pause + Process)
Don’t rush past this—this is where transformation begins.
Where in your life have you been living from a “when I get there” mindset instead of inviting God into your right now?
What have you been turning to for relief that may actually be pulling you out of alignment with His presence?
If you’re honest, is your current rhythm centered around God’s presence… or your performance?
What would it look like for you to stop striving and start returning—daily, intentionally, consistently?
Where might God be more interested in forming you than fast-tracking you?
What is one practical shift you can make this week to put His presence back at the center of your day?
If this resonated with you…
Don’t just move on—pause and sit with it.
Take a moment to reflect on where God may be inviting you into deeper understanding of your identity in Him.
Where is He calling you to stop striving… and start returning?
Then, if you feel led, I’d love to hear from you—what is God revealing to you in this season? Your story might be the very encouragement someone else needs today.
And if this message blessed you, consider sharing it with a friend who may be walking through their own wilderness season. You never know how one word of truth can shift someone’s perspective.
